This week, I’m heading out on a cruise, and the journey to the ship is already part of the adventure. My cousin is flying in from Indiana to my home in Jacksonville, and from there we’ll road-trip together down to Miami to meet the ship. It’s a plan that feels relaxed, flexible—and honestly, pretty smart.
With thousands of flight cancellations happening this week due to a major winter storm, the timing couldn’t be more relevant.
Had my cousin tried to fly in on embarkation day, there’s a real chance things could have gone very differently. A delayed flight. A cancellation. Missed connections. Any one of those could have meant missing the ship entirely—or at the very least, starting a vacation with intense stress, constant uncertainty, and frantic rebooking attempts.
By flying in early, we gave ourselves options.
Arriving ahead of schedule creates a buffer against the unexpected. If a flight is delayed, there’s time to rebook. If a cancellation happens, there may be alternative routes or even the chance to drive instead. When you’re trying to meet a cruise ship—which will absolutely leave on time—those extra hours or days aren’t just convenient, they’re essential.
Flying in early also changes the feel of the trip. Instead of racing the clock, you can breathe. You can enjoy the journey. In our case, we get to spend time together, hit the road from Jacksonville to Miami, and ease into vacation mode long before we step onboard.
Travel rarely goes exactly as planned, especially during peak weather disruptions. But planning to arrive early turns potential chaos into manageable inconveniences—or avoids them altogether.
If you’re cruising anytime soon, especially during winter or hurricane season, consider this your friendly reminder:
The best way to protect your vacation is to give yourself time.
A little extra planning can be the difference between smooth sailing and watching your ship pull away without you.
And trust me—starting a cruise calm, confident, and already relaxed is worth every extra mile. 🚢✨
